Can't use same avatar as old site?
Were the old size limits for avatars too large? I tried to upload the same avatar I was using on the old site, and it's too large for the restrictions on this one.
90px and 6kb is pretty small. My old one was the standard 100x100px and 6.7kb, so it's too big.
It's totally not a big deal for me to just shrink it down, I'm just wondering why make the change?

Re: Can't use same avatar as old site?
you will need to shrink you avatar- you need to turn down the quality of it and save it as a jpg on your desktop.
I can only tell you how to do it on a mac!
save to desktop
open it is preview
save as
it will give you an option to reduce quality- knock it down to at least half
save as jpg
sorry I can't help you with a pc but there must be a way of doing it!

if anyone needs an avatar shrunk to meet the file size i can do it for you. just send me a PM or contact me on AIM/ YIM.

you can also download irfan view to change file type, quality and do basic image editing yourself. while saving the image it won't tell you file size but if you go to open the image you just saved in irfan view the image data will be in the preview, or if you open the file it will be at the bottom. you can just keep resaving it with the same name until you get the size low enough by lowering the JPG quality.

Also if you save it as a .gif file it'll be about 1/4 of the original file size if you had it saved as a .jpg file

I'm struggling alot with the 6kb avatar file limit. Every time I shrink the image it gets bigger. I have 100x100 at 3.2kb - as soon as I resize it to 90x90 it goes to 33.3kb. WTF?

I can't get it small enough no matter what I do.
I'm on a Mac, and I reduced size & quality in Photoshop then saved it as jpg in Preview and the smallest I could get it was 8k. In fact, my icon for DA is 8k as well and it's half the size.
Tried saving it as a gif, and that bumped it up to 12k! And this is all with the quality set so low you can barely see it!
I guess an icon and I are not meant to be.

Re: Can't use same avatar as old site?
it depends more on quality, if i get my icon with similar quality as a .gif it's bigger than it is now as a .jpg.twigletstar wrote:Also if you save it as a .gif file it'll be about 1/4 of the original file size if you had it saved as a .jpg file

This is the part that was confusing me. Not the act of shrinking an image, but the fact that on a forum all about awesome hair and showing pictures of ourselves with awesome hair, we have to have tiny low-rez images for avatars.littlepinkfaery wrote:you will need to shrink you avatar- you need to turn down the quality of it and save it as a jpg on your desktop.

I don't know if this will be helpful, but mine is 90x90 at 72 dpi saved as a jpg.

I had a bit of trouble with mine. I saved it as a .gif, then went to HERE and used the compression tool. It worked for me

Re: Can't use same avatar as old site?
I did mine in photoshop, but what is interesting is, whenever I tried to upload it as a .gif, it wouldn't work? Did it as a jpg and it was fine, but didn't like gifs... Strange. Especially as the gif was a smaller file size than the jpg lol!

if you have photoshop, put it in there and then 'save for web'.. it'll tell you the file size at the bottom and preview the quality.
if anyone's struggling, feel free to pm me your pic and i'll shrink it for ya

Re: Can't use same avatar as old site?
I upped the avatar size so it should work for most people now.
It's a 10KB max and a 90x90 image size.
Let me know if that works!
