Ideas for shortish hairstyles
Hiya, i need some advice!
I have a square face shape and a strong jaw, my hair is f**cked so i have to have it cut off but i hate short hair however i dont have any other option so i need a nice hairstyle while my hair recovers and grows nice after years of GHD-ery and general abuse
Any ideas would be great, i like short hair on other people but i cant pull it off. I did have short hair when i was 16 (i had my hair like claire from steps ) but i looked my a ugly version of adam rickett a truly damaging experience!!!!!
Help me ladies!!!

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
A-line? That way it's short but as the front is longer it still frames your face and is a more flattering short style in my opinion.
I could just be biased though

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
I was convinced for years that I couldn't have short hair because of the same reasons, and also because the last time I had my hair cut short it was in an unflattering style.
Mine is now barely an inch long at the back. A-lines are always good, you can have them as gentle or severe as you like and keeping it longer at the front frames your face more than a pixie crop or similar might

OK, this isn't that short but this was my A-line when I first had it done...it was very short at the back...just an example, I don't know how much of your hair is fried

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
Quite alot scarlet lady. my hair is between collar bone and boob length. Ive tried repair steps (deep conditioning, heat protection) but im realising now that you cant raise the dead, and a good 2-3 inches is dead and gone, clinging on like rats tails
Im even feeling quite embarrassed to even do to a hairdressers to be honest, im so ashamed at how ive let it get!
I like the style you had, i would have something similar but more messy i think (i like to look scraggy )

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
I went from this
to this
About 5-6 inches of my hair was just absolutely DEAD. I couldn't comb through it at all, it was frazzled beyond belief, felt like straw when dry and mush when wet and was bubblegummy beyond belief.
I just said "cut as much off as you have to". Believe me, there's nothing better than the feeling of getting rid of dead hair.
Now, my hair looks like this, though
and this short at the back

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
Yeah mines pretty much the same bomber, its worst the morning after ive dried and straightened it. Yesterday i left conditioner on for 30mins then put heat protection spray on and dried it on a low setting. Then i used my GHD's, it went straight but i could still feel the dry texture, like straw and my brush caught on it everytime i ran it through. Then when i woke up this morning it was worse than ever!!! it goes all wavy and brillo pad-ish and its impossible to brush so i just washed it again
I like your hair in the last pic bomber, i would like it like that but not as short at the back. Does hair grow faster if your ends are alive(if you know what i mean?)lol

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
I have short hair. I don't use my straightners on it anymore....unless I'm off out to a party or something.
Urm..I killed mine (on more than one occasion) with bleach.
Pic time line for you:
(I apologise for the many, many photos...but you NEED to see how I haven't learned & still kill my hair)
many moons of black hair...this was about when I was 23
I went purple after that, but don't have any pics.
got bored, bleached again, then went red & got bored of that too
then, had to do this:
(believe it or not, I still had an undercut)
went brown:
then black AGAIN
(there's a year betwen the super short hair & this pic)
bleached & went purple in March last year
then red brown
then blue,
Then pinky red (you can sorta see how long my hair WAS)
Then brown again
I shaved quite a bit off in august.
I bleached it & went blue again.
& most recently I hawked it.
The very ends of my hair I'm sure is still the hair from when I blued it last year, as it's pretty thin. But yeah. Basically STOP destroying your hair. I always say I'm going to look after mine & I don't

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
Your hair appears to grow faster when it's healthy, because when the ends are dead/damaged, they snap off rather than grow to any great lengths.
My hair was all bleach damage, I don't even own straighteners, but the last time I did nothing to my hair whatsoever (including hardly ever blow drying it), it grew from jaw length in August 2006 to waist length in August/September 2008.

Yes, for the love of god stop straightening! Can you blow dry on a low heat? Its still not great but it can't be as bad as super hot straighters! I do that to smooth mine as its naturally wavy. How about embracing your natural texture? Or get a cut you can just style messily
This thread reminds me how much I want to try an a line. Might need to lose more weight first though
Oh and Sarah, I love your hair in that first pic!

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
Eep straighteners can be the devils work; I originally cut my hair short because it was fried from all the dye and head styling. I have let it dry naturally for a few weeks and it has started to naturally turn alot tamer than it has been when I straightened it, most likely because its retaining moisture etc.
What i'm trying to say is, if you decided to get your hair cut, don't head style it at all if you can help it, and eventually you hair should behave

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
My future sister in law saved me yesteday, she said although it looked realy bad i wouldnt have to go any shrter than shoulder length. It feels much better but some of the very ends still feel rough. She said a big part of the problem was tying my hair up when its wet because the hair stretches when its wet and it you tie it up when it drys it trys to return to its proper length but snaps coz its tied.
Ive got myself some straighteners that can be used on a 90degree setting so if i only use them for special times and keep styling to a mininum will this help my hair grow long and healthy?
Thanks for all the help everyone, its been really good

I went from this:
to this:
My hair wasn't dead, I did it because well, I wanted a change, I used to have even longer hair than that but it was a progression until those two pictures, I love my short hair and although there isn't much styling, colours are great, it's easy to cut out dead hair because it grows back so quickly, I will never go back to long hair.
My favourite colour:
Although sometimes I do do this if it's hot/my fringe is annoying me:

Re: Ideas for shortish hairstyles
After I grew my hawk out, I sported this look. I got mistaken for a boy on more than a few occassions
Then went to this when it grew out.
Then did a bob.
The thing to remember is, HAIR GROWS! Takes time of course, but I've lived through bad enough hair days to appreciate that. My hair is at its longest in 3 years now, and a happy A-line!

I used to have my hair in an A-line with loads of choppy layers, I loved it. A long side-swept fringe is great for lengthening square faces too (I have one myself!)

Hair grows. It grows better if you leave it the hell alone, but it does grow. Mine ... in march. I dont have a recent photo that shows the length so realise that its hitting my bra in the back now, when i pull it straight.
This is what I did when I butchered my hair the first time. Absolutely butchered it, lol.
This is the second time.
I shaved it into a hawk, just before I started Uni in Feb '08. LOOOVED IT! But had such terrible self esteem and was in a terrible 'relationship' with a guy who refused to acknowledge to anyone that we were in a relationship.. but was so great when it was just the two of us.. Eek. Anyway, he hated my hair so I grew some out, then had it all cut off to an even length. Just a basic number 4 or 5 haircut? Then bleached again!!! Dumb.
.. That was in June or so '08.. I cut trims and cuts in between then and now, never got a whole lot off, but just shaping and stuff, so I went from barely an inch long, to the first photo in a little less than 2 years. Not that long considering the regular trims.
Just for kicks. A few short styles I had before I shaved it all off, attempting to cut off the damage (but I kept bleaching and dyeing and styling)
