Hair extensions in ancient times

Post by darcitananda » Fri Jul 23, 2010 4:54 pm

Hi everyone. I was recently shown this blog post/article on the use of hair color and hair extensions and wigs in ancient Egyptian times. I just found it really fascinating and wanted to share it. It's kind of cool to think that people have been using hair extensions for thousands of years before us. I mean, I guess we all knew this, but the extent of it is pretty incredible. If you're interested in genetics or anthropology there is also some interesting discussion going on there too. :)

If anyone watches Rome (the HBO show) the women on that have some fantastic wigs, even blue ones!
It claims to be a very historically accurate show where research into aesthetics is concerned, so might be something to look into too, if you want to further your reading on ancient hair!

The Celtic warriors often "bleached" their hair with lime, or a mixture of ash and urine.

I think I'll stick with the regular stuff.

Ohww cool, thankyou.

Cha when I was young and closer to blond I lightened my hair with lemon, and it worked. I lightened two streaks in the front of my hair. You have to be out in the sun all day though :P You know with sticky hair.... :P (I was swimming and reapplied it a few times.) Probably not the most effective method but i was pretty impressed as a 12 year old :P

"Close inspection revealed that the natural hair (from the grave of a woman), of slightly more than shoulder-length, had been augmented with a considerable number of artificial lengths of false hair, very reminiscent of modern dreadlocks, meticulously worked into the natural hair to create an imposing high coiffure."

I love this kind of stuff. I'm a big history geek. Thanks for posting!!!
