I just dyed my roving for the first time and I love it!!!

Dumb question: Can you dye it black and how? I do have some procion dye (http://www.prochemicalanddye.com/store/ ... t=0&page=1)but I guess I'd need something extra to make it work on wool.

Obviously wool can be dyed black. I'd suggest maybe starting with some wool from a black sheep, that way you don't have to go from WHITE all the way to black.

I figured it could be dyed black, but I didn't think you could do it with food dyes or koolaid though.
Has anyone ever used the procion dyes to dye roving? I saved the directions but the dye is at my mom and dad's so it will be a while before I get to experiment.

I dyed my second batch of felted dreads late last night. I used 14 drops of Yellow food dye and 3 drops of green. It came out a perfect Monster Flesh green! Yay! I'll post pics later. I really want to get a good color chart going of food coloring mixes.

It came out something like this.

I chucked a bottle of Queen green food dye and a teensy splash of yellow of the same brand together and got this:

Wilton's Ivory paste, heavily saturated:

have you noticed if sun exposure makes the uv stuff less reactive?

This is supposed to cause wool to go UV reactive, have not tried it so do not know if it works and if you can use it on colors without causing discoloration but really want to test it out sometime...

I've never actually soaked my roving before dying....I wet it, but never soaked. hmmmmmm.

I ave wool to dye, so will attempt soaking first, oooh & Ima doing it in the microwave. new things!!

Koolaid is a powdered mix that you combine with water and sugar to make a flavored, sugary drink. In order to make it look enticing, Koolaid has a lot of food color in it. Hence why it is a convenient thing to use for dying dreads. Koolaid now comes in a variety of flavors and colors--several reds (strawberry, cherry, black cherry), several greens (lime, watermelon), blue (blue raspberry), and purple (grape)--plus pink (pink lemonade) and yellow (lemonade).

If you felt your dreads then dye them, felting again should not be necessary. All you do is dye, rinse, and let dry.

I've never used koolaid, so i can't speak to its colorfastness, but I have used liquid and paste food coloring a lot. The liquid and paste food coloring is VERY color fast--I've never had it run or fade at all.
