I'm pretty sure I've still got all the pictures, It's just a case of sitting down and typing it all out.

Cool this is definately different to how I've seen other ppl make their wool dreads.

Is it difficult to keep the horizontal wool fibres wrapped around the dread when felting?

I don't find it too tricky, but to prevent it being an issue, only roll the wool towards you.
Not back and forth. That way the wool doesn't re-open and get all tangled.
It's something I'll need to add when I write the text.

The trickiest part for me is wrapping the first bit of wool around the string.
The rest is fine.

Excellent tutorial, but I must ask where you got that neony yellow wool from? It's the closest thing to neon lime I've ever seen in wool and I'd really like to have some fun winter dreaddies ^^;

It isn't neon, but if you use UV reactant dyes it should work.

what are the benefits of using this method, besides being able to control the thickness (?)? is there less of a seam, or is it easier to eliminate the seam by doing it this way?

No seam, thickness control, different color effects, you could give the dread a wire or other core

But really, the tutorial is just to give you a choice of how to felt your dreads.
There's a number of ways dreads could be felted.
have fun and find a way that best suits you

What is that you're palm rolling on?

Now that I've got hand carders my wool dread options have REALLY opened up. But I need a better surface to palm roll dry on--something with a bit of texture to help mesh the fibers and grip them as I roll. Hope that makes sense. I've been thinking a carpet square would be great... but I dunno how to get just one little square.

what about a little rug / door mat?

I've looked at a lot of rugs/mats, but they kind of fray and fuzz up. That would mean the fuzz gets in the dreads--not cool. Carpet, however, is meant to NEVER shed at all.

Carpet and design stores get rid of old samples and scraps aaaaall the time. Sometimes they have a special area near their dumpster where they put the stuff people are welcome to take. Otherwise I'm sure if you went in and asked real nice they'd have no problem giving you a bit.
I have a couple of "throw rugs" that are actually 2'x1' carpet samples that I ripped off the wood display they were originally on. The nice thing about those is that the edges are finished instead of rough like they'd be on a remnant.

I use a bamboo sushi mat if that helps
