Saspie-Doo will share her secrets ^_^ (Mega-Tute!!)

After pretty much constant questions about how I make my dreads & photographing the process, then not showing it....I'll finally submit & post a "tutorial" on how my I make my dreads.

I'll edit this as & when.

Machine felted dreads

Ok, so first of all you'll need some roving:
Image

TEAR the roving, don't cut it to the length you need:
Image

Then split it to your desired thickness (For these, I'm doing 3, the bit on the right is to show roving before splitting)
Image

Palmroll (dry...no need for water just yet)
Image

TA-Daaaaaaaaaaa! (Next to an un-rolled bit)
Image

Close up of the ends:
Image

I then fold em, so you've got your DE & then stuff em into a pillow case - which usually causes them to fold again:
Image

Knot your case up, secure it with a bobble of whatever:
Image

Put them in the wash (jus thought I'd show the setting I use):
Image
That's a wool 30. BUT I do know that everyone's machine will vary. I've tried different settings & depending on the type of dread I'm making depends on if I use the cold wash, or a very quick 40 degree wash.

I CANNOT STRESS HOW MUCH THIS WILL BE TRIAL & ERROR!!!!

I've ruined dreads in the past by putting them in on a wash that was too hot.

When they come out of the wash, they look a bit weird
Image

Sometimes the ends felt together, but it easy enough to gently prise them apart.
Image

And then lay them out & wait for them to dry.....& do it again!!!
Image

Harlies

Simples:

Roving
Image

if you half the roving normally, half it again (so into quarters) & then loop em around each other

palm roll

Machine as normal....

I'll add more pics of anything else you'd like me to show, I'll do that too, or answer questions etc.

Let me know if the pics are big enough, I'm on the laptop atm, so they look ok to me, but I can change the size if needs be.

Do you just split like SEs and then wrap round each other in the middle?? If that makes sense? I know what I mean...hard to describe

I will. erm....if I can. It's difficult to describe how I do them & will be almost impossible to photograph. I've actually tried before & failed.

Do you still get lines in the roving using this method?

No :D but they need a few goes in the machine to really knit the fibres together.

You do with the harlies & SE's, but that can't really be helped & if you palm roll after they've came out the wash it helps "smooth" them out a bit.

Just to say - good going over with felting needle on SEs before you put them in the machine means you don't really get lines - mine have come out pretty good, I'll post pics later :)

It's the blues I had left over from Sally's kit...I can't wait for her to see them...I just need to do the accents on them now :)
