Transitionals with swirled/candycane tips
First off I give credit of the tecnique to a lady on the fakehair community named Frau and this is her tutorial http://community.livejournal.com/fakehair/2886499.html.
So this is how I make my swirled transitionals. This is a lot of work!
Tool:
A felting needle- I use a 36g that is for corse fiber so their is bigger barbs to catch the hair.
The Hair:
You need 5 pieces of backcombed hair per dread. I'm making a chest length dread so I use half the length of a pack for the base and 1/4 of the length of the pack to make the tips. I was able to make 16 tips out of 1/2 a pack of hair.
So to make 40 dreads you need 200 pieces of back comed hair
So that's why this is time consumeing.
On to the tutorial!
Step one: Take one of the tips and place it on the backside of the dread towards the end of the base dread. Make sure you leave enough overlap so the fibers can hold together.
Step two: Place the second piece on top of the dread towards the end of the base dread but inline with the bottom dread.
Step three: Now place your fingers so that the chunk of hair you want to felt together is in between them.
Step four: Now take your felting needle and stab through the hair in random spots in a quick manor.
It will look like this once you have stabed it a few times.
Step five flip over the dread and you will see the fibers sticking through. Repeat Step four on this side as well but you do not need to felt it af much.
This will help the fibes bond to the base hair for a secure hold.
Step six: Now twist it up! I always let it twist up back on it's self for storage purposes.
Repeat steps one - six to opposite side and your ready to seal!
Trouble shooting on the twist:
Ok this happens often with this type of transitional where the base hair wants to pop out the side like this...
To stop this from happening this is what you do.
Step one: Untwist so that a small piece of the base hair is visable
Step two: Tuck the hair inbetween the other two colors you are twisting. When you twist make sure the tip of the base hair stays tucked in.
Voi La! it dissapeared!
So this....
Turns to this for storage...
Then turns to this once it they are all sealed...
Hope you found this useful!!!!!

I remember her doing the needle felting method too...she made some awesome blonde, green and lime green transitionals with it, but I never got to grips with this method that much.
But thanks for the tutorial! I adore your dreads. <3

Nice Now couldnt you also use this for regular transitionals? My transies stink because theres always a lump where I latch hook the thing in. I suppose this would remedy that! Im going to have to try it even though I dont have time to make a whole set!

Wow.. I had flicked over this tut before but hadnt given it the credit that it deserves... this is a neat lil way of creati8ng transitional dreads.. but it does look very time consuming though... still diversity is always interesting to look at!!

I REALLY want to try this!! How do you fold them like that for "storage though"? It seems SO convenient XD

This is from my DE's tutorail found here http://delicstutorials.livejournal.com/1752.htmlDeadGirl SUPERSTAR wrote:I REALLY want to try this!! How do you fold them like that for "storage though"? It seems SO convenient XD
Step 7: Keep the dread twisted
First hold the end of the hair you just twisted tightly and then hook your other finger in the center of the dread and then grab the other end with the same fingers that are holding the other end and hold it up. It should look like this.
Then unhook the finger at the bottom and it should look like this.
Step 8: Lay the dread down in a safe spot and move onto the next dread. This is a good way to store a bunch of dreads at once and seal them later.
Voi La! I store my dreads in a plastic shopping bag untill i'm ready to seal them all.
In the ones pictures above for this tutorial all i did was do this on the tips of the transitionals and twisted them upon their self.

These are lovely. Their creation must be so time consuming but the end result is so worth it. Thanks for posting this tut!
