Hair Extension Installation: What's should I charge?

Post by TwiggyDEVOUR » Thu May 26, 2011 12:38 am

Weird asking this question really ^^'

Basically, I don't do installations for any of my own hair as I don't feel where I live and the environment I work in is suitable to offer this service. But I am now looking at working further a field outside of my own hair creations to work with loose hair installations for other salons. The experience isn't an issue.. it's just working out how much should I ask/or expect for the cost of installing the extensions per hour? say for micro-ring and fusion bond installments.

I can understand if some members who own salons and offer this service would wish to not make public of profit they make from these services, so please PM me instead, and know that I have no intension of sharing this information. I would just like to know what I should charge if I was to become a freelance Hair Extension Specialist and work for someone else.

You can see my prices online here - http://www.chameleonhairdesign.com

Just whatever you do, don't price yourself too low. I got this advice from another extensionist. If you are too cheap, mid-level clients will think that maybe you aren't very good quality and avoid you. Don't worry too much about people who are put off about the price being too high for them, from my experience, they aren't really the kind of clients that you want anyway.

I recommend getting the price of the extensions/materials, allow about 10% for inflation (if you are having leaflets or price lists printed, you don't want to have to keep updating them) Then work out the maximum time it will take you to do an install and times this by the hourly rate (mine is £20.00) you want to set. I would then add an extra 10-20% on top of that, this is generally for overheads: travel, room rent, tools, Free consultations, advertising etc, but I also add this extra to fill my prices out a little so as not to seem too cheap. I imagine you could also add an extra 10% on top of that seeing as you are to be working in London.

That said, I am on the cheap side still, and have been told this by a couple of customers, that while I was one of the cheaper extensionists in the area, I was the most knowledgeable and they liked that I could answer all of their questions(Thanks Forum/Internet!).

Hope this helps, and good luck!
