I am having a bit of a problem with my dreads and thought I would ask the advice of the people in this community. I have been in the process of installing wrapped dreads on myself - which is where you braid your own hair with some synth, wrap more synth hair around it, then when you get past the braided part you backcomb/twist/seal as usual. I have about half my head done (I'm going to *try* to teach my hubby how to do the back so we can finish) I've noticed in the past 24 hours that some of the dreads kind of HURT. like at the root area, it feels like hair pulling. Now I'm all freaked out that this is going to either break off or rip my hair right out (yes I've heard of traction alopecia) my hair is short and the dreads are to the middle of my back. Is it possible that I made them too tight? or that they are just too heavy for my hair? How much itchiness/tenderness is normal and what counts as a problem? I've had wrapped dreads and also braids before and I remember the braids hurting for awhile - and I dont think I lost any hair from it. I'm just really feeling concerned.

Re: dreads too tight?
It could be the weight, since wrapped dreads are exceptionally heavy. If you see loose hairs at the roots of your extensions with little white balls at the ends, take them out -- the white things are root bulbs, and if they're coming out, the dreads are too tight or too heavy.

Re: dreads too tight?
thanks for the advice. I think they're settling down now - they're mostly itchy/a little irritated now. The only time they hurt is when I tried to pull them back - i think they're still a little tight for that.
