There has got to be an easier way to make DE dreads!!!

Post by lustfullocks » Tue Aug 10, 2010 1:00 am

Okay.. so now that my hair is too short to wear SE dreads and i'm going to be entering in a few vendor booths.. i've ventured into DE dreads as my advertisement lol

however..

I can't STAND how much longer it takes to make.. there has got to be a way other than stepping on the other half of the hair, or holding it between your legs, the back of a chair etc to make one side of the DE dread without the other side getting loose!

Has anyone tried holding it down with heavy duty clips or something?!

I've got a hook that I hang the hair from while making SEs. For DEs, I clip the middle onto the same hook with binder clips to keep it in place.

Thanks for asking this!! I'm getting a terrible blister on my foot where I pin the hair against a table leg making DE's.

I love the nail idea:)

I do all mine like this, found it much quicker and easier as you can pull really hard without clips pinging all over the place! ;)

does that mean you end up with a DE but it has a loop at the top?

a little one but it's usually barely noticable. but it acutally makes the dread hang a little better as well.

you make a SE and loop the hair for the second dread thru the loop of the SE and backcomb as normal.

yeah, but how do u clamp it? I think im confusing this way with the nail idea someone mentioned earlier. Would it not matter how u clamped the dread as it just wouldnt slip as much?

thanks for the advice! I'm going to test a few things out on my dreading board..

i particularly don't like 2 SE dreads combined like so
to make DE dreads... i actually prefer them to be one solid piece.. they just look a lot neater in my personal opinion when braided in, and you can control if you want one side to be longer than another.. i usually wont braid them exactly in the middle because i like a layered effect of braiding them slightly off center.

(please do not take offense if i have used your picture, or if you make DE dreads this way!)

May have a go at doing it this way just to see how they turn out. Or I could just get frustrated at DEs..or perhaps get a proper clamp..I havent made dreads in ages :/

I use those same bag clips when I make DEs, and get hardly any (if at all) displacement. And I can get pretty rough with the dread, especially when I'm frustrated. >_>

Haaaate doing DEs.

I do mine harlequin style and clamp the other half with those seamstress clamps used to hold fabric in place. I suppose a clipboard would work too.....

yayyy my boyfriend screwed in this heavy duty clip he found at home depot that works awesome! It has a rubber grip and it requires some work to open so that the hair doesn't slip! I can't wait to start making some Double enders! Especially now that i'm releasing my new webstore tomorrow!

I do mine as harlequins and just hold the one side down with my foot, coz my work space is just a big patch of floor so I'm down there sitting among the hair. I find it to be way easier than fiddling with clamps, just get the hair sorted out, make sure both bits of the not-being-worked-on dread are together to it won't slip one way or the other when I'm pulling on it, and put my heel down to secure it. Easy as a pie. The fact that I use the boiling water technique to seal them makes me feel better about having had my feet on all my dreads, haha
