Re: WANTED=How to do real dreads
I would be wary of get_up_dread_up and the advice people throw around. I was a member for a little while and left when I couldn't deal anymore.... You'll find tons of know-it-all nazis (like the mod, for example) who are really supportive of each other while they spread around lots of misinformation.
There's no one way to dread your real hair just like there's no one way to do synthetic dreads. Take bits of advice here and there from EXPERIENCED and TALENTED people (and by that I mean people with nice dreads!) and then learn by doing. There's a large Jamaican/Caribbean population in Toronto (where I first learned to dread) and dread technique is passed down from there -- these techniques are quite different from what people have learned on the west coast through the granola/rainbow hippie tribes. The end results tend to be quite different. If you like tidy, tamed looking dreads, be careful who you get your tuts from.
Personally speaking:
My fave resource was Dreadhead HQ.
My best advice is to start with tidy, uniform sectioning and backcomb very, very tightly.
