When to dye

I am making white and red candy cane wool dreads. I want to dye my hair red (with either L'Oriel Feria or Garnier Nutrisse) to blend in better. After dyeing how long should I wait to put the the dreads? Should I wait until my hair has been washed once, or have they improved red dyes since last I tried it many years ago? I'm mostly concerned about red rubbing off onto the white wool.

If you wash with them in, you will more than likely have some of the red bleed.
