"Easter Island" moss terrarium

Post by chelseagirl » Thu May 24, 2012 7:24 pm

So, I'm really bad at keeping plants alive, so I decided to try making a moss terrarium with air plants, since they are supposedly so easy to take care of. I really like it, I think I'll try to make another one. :)

It was actually pretty cheap to make. The bowl cost $6, the air plants cost $2 each, the Easter Island Moai heads cost $2, the gravel I bought at an aquarium store in a 20 pound bag for like $10 (it's enough to probably make 10 terrariums this size), the river rocks and moss I just picked up on my property. :)

I just made 2 more, using teeny tiny vampire figurines. lol, I'm going to call them my "moss-feratu" (nosferatu) terrariums! I'll post photos shortly once I figure out how to get good photos. It's hard because the lights glare off the glass, and I'm trying to figure out a way to cut down on that glare. I'm going to do one also using tiny zombie figurines :)

They are awesome! such a good idea, and I totally get the struggle to keep regular plants alive.
Moss-feratu = friggin genius!! It made me lol.

As for the glare, you can't beat taking photo's in natural day light. Everything always looks better.
Can;t wait to see the picks of the other ones you have made, you should definately sell these!!

Oh my goodness what is this awesomeness
What are air plants? :i6:
Do they just live and be cool without you having to do literally anything?

air plants are really cool, if you are growing them indoors and the air is dry, you will need to submerge the plant in water for 2-3 hours about every two weeks. Otherwise, in a shade-house or unheated home, you can use a soaking mist once or twice a week in summer, once a month in cooler weather. :)

Here is moss-feratu terrarium #2!

Oh, air plants actually die if you put them in soil, so you can just put them literally anywhere. Sorry about the blurry last photo, I'm going to try to get a more clear one of the Victorian vampire and the female victim :) I really suck at taking photos

Your pictures are great. And so are those terrariums! I have been wanting to try my hand at them for some time (I feel bad when my balcony plants have to die in the winter, so this way there can be plants all the time!), but never have I seen any as cool as yours.
Website? Yup, I have one of those! www.bloodhoney.net

It would be awesome if I could sell some of these...but I don't know where I would sell them. They would be too much trouble to try to ship. I gave "Moss-feratu #1" to a friend yesterday as a house-warming gift, I think she liked it.

I made a new one with a scary garden gnome:

So brilliant, love the gnome.

As far as selling and shipping, you could sell them in kit form. Pack everything individually in a box and ship as one, and the buyer puts it all together themselves. You could do a little care guide and instructions how to set-up the terrarium. Failing that, is there any craft type fayres locally you could attend and have a stall at?
