Orly Glitz & Glamour, with Barry M Instant Nail Effects. I added a topcoat because I didn't like the texture of the crakled polish very much. I put it on really thick because I didn't want lots of tiny little cracks, but bigger gaps to show the gold. It goes matt once dry which looked awesome in contrast to the super sparkly gold but I'm a fussy bugger about textures

I know Dystopatica is going to rage at me for this one, but am I the only person who really doesn't like the cracked polishes? They just don't do it for me, which is unusual being as I normally love anything a) black and b) distressed-looking. Perhaps it's that it looks a bit too much like those godawful textured wallpapers you used to get.

It reminds me of crackle glaze paint that was all the rage a few years ago to distress your wooden furniture.

My nails are ugly and hideous, and I never paint them because they don't grow strong (or even you know, mildly average thickness) so my opinion doesn't matter really..but I think i'd love the crackle over top of dark grey/gunmetal, or maybe even the matte black. I loved that pic of the contrast between matte black and shiny black a page or so ago, and I bet that would look cool with the crackle. Does the pattern change a lot if you paint it on thinner?

The crackle is actually matte itself, however you have to seal it with a topcoat to get any kind of longevity out of it so that would make the base and the crackle the same texture. You *could* try it with a shiny base and not seal it so the crackle stayed matte but it probably wouldn't last more than a night out.

The amount of crackle you get depends on how much you apply, the thicker you put it on the larger the sections and the fewer the cracks. The shot of my nails was quite thin which is why it looked shattered rather than cracked.

You lot are doing wonders for the sales of that Rimmel matte top coat, I bought it today. It was on 3 for 2 so I got some silver and pink too, the pink is supposed to have a fruity scent when it dries.. Not convinced by that but we'll see

lol! i just came into this thread to check what brand the matte top coat was :p I looked in boots yesterday and couldnt find one

ETA: i love it!! you can watch it go from shiny to matte! awesome stuff (easily pleased)

Thanks to this thread I have also bought a bottle of the Rimmel Matte Finnish topcoat and this is what I've come up with so far (sorry about rubbish pictures):

Second go, this was inspired by my TruBlood calendar and I absolutely loved this result:



Just incase this isn't coming across in the photo, the red was added on after the matte top coat and it looked so funky!

Next looks will include some pretty emerald green and possibly will do some geek Stargate inspired ones. It's been a while since I've done my nails this often and I'm enjoying getting back into it

Not seen much of the matte topcoat over lighter colours so I tried it over a shade I got today, which is Boots 17 Supreme Shine in Bared. The polish has a kind of almost glitter in it which doesn't lend well to being either the neutral shade it's supposed to be or being mattified but it's not too bad. It was technically free anyway as Boots are 3-for-2 and I got two other shades I really wanted anyway.

WOW! I love this.. Unfortunately my nails are always different lengths and don't get looked after very well. I have proper old washer woman hands! I don't really like wearing varnish because it just makes them look worse. And whatever type of polish I use it chips after a day. grump. What is this matte topcoat you guys are talking about?

edit: Okay, I somehow managed to miss page 3 of this thread. I may have to go and buy a matte topcoat now. Very niiice.

Rimmel do one you can buy it at boots, it turns shiny polish in to matte polish.
