Re: Does this bother anyone else?
i used to hate "hun"... i remember someone saying to me once that the only people who could get away with it are ladies in crinolines in the deep south, if youre not one dont use it! and that really stuck with me.
however, ive realised ive picked it up and i do it all the time now >_< i have to make a concious effort not to, and im hoping ill get out of the habit pretty quickly. feel free to poke me if i do it! =p
in real life though, thats different... all my friends get called honey, sweetie or darling, and chick is reserved for just one or two in particular that it suits most =) i HATE being called babe - to me, that will always be "... pig in the city" lol! and for some reason i really dislike being called love too, i think because it sounds quite common (imagine it said with a very broad yorkshire accent!)

I hate all of them!
When I first got with my boyfriend he used to call me "babe" all the time, and it used to drive me potty! Needless to say he doesn't do it now
Once when at the cinema the man selling the tickets called my boyfriend "love" which I thought was pretty funny

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
when i worked at pizza hut, all the waitresses and waiters had a tag word, and once this man shouted at helen because she said darling to him.
it doesn't really bother me, my friend Midge calls his girl friends "babes" which is fine by me. i call my close friends "muffin" or "sugar" sometimes but it depends how close i am with them.i use "love" with people i barely know but that's just a yorkshire thing. i am guilty of "hun" online but i don't think it's derogatory or offensive at all

I remember being on a college trip up north somewhere and a lady in a shop called me 'cock'. I was taken aback for a minute because calling someone 'cock' where I come from is very likely to get you into a fight!

people in the midlands use 'cocker' a lot. mostly really broad accented people, proper black country phrase it is!

I use it but have wondered lately about whether it is good to use it or not.
What bothers me most is 'mate' which I find aggressive and people saying 'hugs' to every bad time someone has...no matter how serious.

Sorry, but... What is 'cock' or 'cocker' supposed to mean =l?? & Who would you use it to? Friends / loved one / OH?
Because here, calling someone a 'cock' is offensive...

i used to work with a middle-aged lady who called me cocker (sometimes cock too ) all the time. and customers, and managers. it's just slang really. the same as using 'mate' or 'love'... only more funny i suppose.

I only use hun with people I actually like, that and sugar or shugs or sweets but usually only with the lads I work with as I usually have to bribe them to do work

I use it all the time, I don't think of it as overly affectionate...just smiley and friendly.
I usually go for hun, hunni, hunni bee, dolly, doll, doll features, sweetie, lady, laydee, kitten, pickle...
This is proof perfect that my online persoanlity is very different to my real life one as I don't go in for that much irl at all.

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
i dont mind being called hun or sweetheart etc by people i dont know. i just dont like it when men who are older then me call me pet names. probably because i think they are old and pervy or something.
this might sound a little weird but i actually prefer people i dont know or know well to call me hun or something because i find that calling me by my name is personal and intimate. i do not approve of name tags for this reason.
i dont care what anyone on the forum calls me, as long as its not a dirty word.

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
I'm guilty of doing that. Or I tend to say "Me Loaf", "Misses" / "Misseh" [terrible I've adopted myspace speak nooo].
The word "hun" within my offline mates is a term of affection and friendship.
I always get called "me duck", "sweetheart" and "my love" by bus drivers and taxi drivers. I take it as a compliment, but then I'm odd like that lol

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
i think it's cute... i don't say it much in real life and i see it used here a lot, and kind of like it
i've also picked up typing "y'all" from the internet because i think it's cute
i get being offended if a smarmy older man (like 30-40, not elderly) says it to you in a condescending manner, that kind of offends me (like, in a workplace?) but on the internet there is far worse to be offended by than someone trying to be sweet IMO
i get offended by people's intention. if their intention is bad (to be hurtful or condescending) then i get offended. if their intention is to be welcoming, nice, or sweet then why get offended even if it isn't something that I do? hope that makes sense

I don't mind anyone calling me anything raelly it's all just words and it's all harmless fun at the end of the day.
I work part time in a charity shop and get called lovey, duck, sweetheart, darlin etc all the time
I also get a few people who just call me tattoo! cus i have quite a few and it;s the first thing that springs to their minds when they see me lol I just don't care at all
As far as i'm away it's the same as our slang round here saying 'eh up me duck!' with 'cock' being another form of bird as in cockeral! it;s not meant in a derogatory way just cheery!Sorry, but... What is 'cock' or 'cocker' supposed to mean =l?? & Who would you use it to? Friends / loved one / OH?

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
Someone is rude, there're complaints. Someone uses a term of non-offensive endearment, there're complaints. Has it ever occured to anyone that it's to do with where people live and were brought up, rather than that they're out to annoy you?
I live in London, and both online and RL (mostly RL) I've been love, luv, mate, darlin', duck, chook, (cock and cocker as someone else said, but I thought cocker was for men ) bruv, dear, hun, honey, sweets, the list is endless.
I guess if speaking with people who are from different locations or speak differently to you is annoying, don't use the internet?

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
I only say it on here and to my friends because I think its alot friendlier
The only reason I say use it on here is because were a very close, friendly and nice community. Didnt really think it would bother people.
However "love", "darling" and "petal" (Yes have been called petal before haha!) are a bit OTT, esp if its to your face.
I dunno though.

I feel really bad now because i'm a sod for this. I can't help it, i'm an endearment addict. I use hun, babe, darling, love. I don't mean to offend anyone, so i do apoligise if i have. I think its partially due to the way we speak to each other in my family, its all endearment based. I shall try to reign myself in in future. x

Don't you dare! If you were going around calling everyone bitch, sod, git, 'insert your insults of choice here' then yes, you should. But nobody should ever feel bad for being friendly, especially with all the (read list above) -type people around.downinahole wrote:I feel really bad now because i'm a sod for this. Thank you, i feel better now Ive never had anyone in real life get offended by it but if it annoys people when i'm talking to them one on one, such as pms, i would feel better if they told me so i could stop, or they'll be stuck with it xKaminoke wrote:

Re: Does this bother anyone else?
I've always despised being called hun or honey but I think that's just because I'm of the opinion i don't suit being a honey or hun. I prefer silly insults said in affectionate ways.
On forums however if I don't know your real name and feel stupid using your username i'll tend to stick with 'thanks missy!' .... is missy offensive? i mean it in a happy bouncy way haha but mayhaps it comes across in the more 'who do you think you ARE missy?!' way now I think about it... hmm!
