First synthetic dreads

So I finally decided to stop being just an admirer and try my hand at making synthetic dreads.


I have no idea how I ended up with one so freakishly long xD I consider 2 of my dreads unusable, but 3 pretty good for my first set.

The ends of the good 3. They're not the tightest in the world, any tips? I figured since they're SE's, my hair braided around the end would sort of...reinforce it anyway. I would by no means be selling them, so they don't have to be fancy, but do they look sturdy enough that I could wear them for a while?


Just installed one real quick(excuse the hair clip, I used it in lieu of an elastic to save time and effort), and it felt like it would keep well. They're very sturdy feeling when I pinch them.

Also, is it normal that they should unravel if you pinch a section and purposely turn it the opposite way of which it was sealed? Like I rolled them around in my hands and it seemed fine, but just to test it out I very directly rotated one section against the way it was sealed, and it puffed up and came a bit undone. When I let go it just returned to it's normal spot. Is it normal? I'm assuming if it's not, the answer is MOREMOREMORE! backcombing.

That 3rd one is definitely the best. You migth wanna seal them again, dreads do puff up a little with wear, I've twisted some the opposite way too in the past & they fluff up a little.

However, keep at it. Looking great so far!

These are awesome! Great taper and loops Getting the length uniform will come to you with practice, on my set each one got progressively longer so when you lined them all up first to last it looked like they were stretching

I always wondered about the untwisty thing too but I think its normal, I can't imagine how you could make a twisted dread that isn't possible to untwist a bit... it would probably have to be felted rock solid or something scary! As long as it pops right back into place I think its fine

For you first time, these dreads are very very good!
Normally i see dreads lacking a ton of backcombing when its someones first try, but these dont look like they need it that much like ive seen others have. If you twist a dread backwards its normal for it to look like its coming undone but when you let go, it should spring back to its tightness. If they easily unravel or keep puffing up just from use or moving them around then i would definitely backcomb them more or seal them tighter.

They look great for the first try! I would suggest investing in some little hair elastics for the loops. I like to put them on during the initial backcombing and then take them off before I seal them. Just backcomb a few times to get them nice in tight against the loop. I've found that it helps with those scragglies at the top of the dread.

I don't mind the different lengths, in fact I rather like it


TEXTURE!

They still poof a bit when I twist them, but snap right back in to place when I let go so I guess that's just normal and I'm just being paranoid.

Great for a first attempt, my first ones were only good for the bin! And my loops were a mess, your's are nice and tidy

these have a very nice taper and the loops look great, maybe just a bit of practise getting the small bumps evened out but otherwise theyre looking fab

Those are gorgeous! You've done wonderful. I do agree, the color is lovely and matches so well!
