First try at fat dreadies

Post by .::CirCuit::. » Tue May 17, 2011 12:39 am

Ok so I usually wear pretty thin to medium dreads (usually no more than the width of a sharpie) but lately I have wanted to try some thick puffies! I came up with these so far but my problem is the colors do NOT want to seal together D= I back combed quite a bit and I have sealed them now twice.... any suggestions? I would love some critique on the sealing and how they look overall please!!

And this last one has a normal (sharpie width dread) thrown in for comparison.

Any and all opinions are welcomed! Please spare no feelings! Thank you lovelies

Those are fantastic!!! I love fat dreads. Your taper is perfect.

How dense/heavy are they? My problem making thick dreads is they get REALLY dense and hard, and weight a ton.

surprisingly they are not that dense or heavy... they are pretty soft but still much heavier than I guess a "normal" sized dread?

thank you for the nice comment =D

Those are absolutely beautiful, honestly. Gorgeous taper, and I love the texture your particular movement of twisting creates. Some colors are just harder to seal... it looks like you may be using a few of those, but the seal doesn't look too terrible from the pictures!

the colors seal nicely... to themselves. they are coming apart where the two colors meet =( It's extremely frustrating. I will try another round of steaming on them to see if that helps... or maybe boil them?

thank you for the compliments!

Perhaps try backcombing the two colors together slightly? You might wind up with a bit of a swirl/marble effect, but could also get them to seal better.

You could also try stabbing through a few times with a felting needle!

wow very nice. felting needle definitly sounds like a good idea to remedy your problem though. but honestly, if theyre not coming undone by themselves, i wouldnt worry to much about it.

They look fantastic. I agree with the others about the felting needle. A few good stabs should keep the swirls together :)

They look really awesome! You can't really tell in the pics that they are not sealing together well.

thank you for the tips! I will try a felting needle!! they don't really come apart on their own I'm just worried about some damage from day to day wear. They only come apart when I twist them opposite. I received a request for some extra fat falls and I just want to make sure I can actually make them really well before I agree to take the order ya know?
