Wig Weight

Post by Miss Liberty » Wed Apr 18, 2012 3:01 pm

hey all!

I know it has been some time since I have posted any actual projects I am working on. I have been focusing on my jewelry line and completing my education, but am now back in the dread game and having fun!

I am working on my first wig. It is going so smoothly I am almost amazed with myself! I do have one question for the wig makers among us though....

I have never owned a dread wig, and this is my first go at it. It is about 50 percent completed and has a bit of weight to it. I would not consider it unbearable. In fact, it is lighter than SOME falls I have had in the past. However, when it is complete I think it might be a bit on the heavy side. Is this normal? What is the weight of the average dread wig? I would think simply because of the amount of hair it will have some heft, but I want to ensure I am not over doing it. I would love to market the piece and thus wish to make it the very best product it can be.

I have added some crin to it for both texture and to alleviate some of the weight. Any other insights or suggestions would be helpful. Below is a picture of the work n progress, although I am a bit further along now than shown in the picture:

i think my last wig i sent was 2 lb yikes haha but still comfortable and not soo heave.
The trick is to add less dreads at the bottom. ..It also depends how thick the dreads are. My way is i make thick ones at the top but the size decreases as i go lower.

this one was pretty heavy but still wearable, first wig ever though

this one is more lighter because i didn't dread all the way down i left about 5 layers of weft loose which worked since it was a short wig.

here you can see some hair poking out from the part at the bottom. Kinda gives you an idea how much loose weft i left off without dreading.

I agree. Fewer and smaller on bottom, more and thicker on top.
