Which Soap?

Post by *Roxy* » Mon May 11, 2009 7:06 pm

Hi, I have my merino wool in hand and now I'm ready to get started on my first attempt at making roving dreads.

Just one question, what soap do I need??

Thanks :D

I just used Sainsbury's Basics 3 for 13p soap and it has worked fine :D

The lady i buy my wool off recommended i use a fairly neutral soap (not sure where you're from but i use a brand called sunlight which has no fragrance/ additives). That said ive used hand soap and still gotten good results- ive found that my dreads are more affected by temperature of the water but i guess it depends on how you felt em!

I use the cheapest dishwashing liquid (lemon) I could find and it works like a charm

I use whatever soap happens to be by the sink at the time

Mostly tesco's own brand.
I've never had a problem with any of the soaps I've used tbh.
Providing you felt it "good and proper" its all fine ;)

I happen to be allergic to Sunlight and don't think Tesco is in Canada. Can you suggest any other brands?

I use a dime size amount, of palmolive orange anti-bacterial liquid dish soap per half (stew) pan of boiling water. Do not add soap till you remove water from stove, it will suds up. After about 3-4 dreads I reheat, no suds up usually then as I have used most the soap out of it. Add a little bit more soap. I change the water completely after about the 4th time or if I change colors.

I use washing up liquid, whichever is on offer at the supermarket. I discovered it following a horrible mishap involving my very furry cat :o   I sometimes also add a squirt of anti-bac handsoap for good measure and it works a treat.

Cat hair, by the way, wold make VERY good dreadlocks
What, that? It's a spade.

I live in Austria and we don´t have tesco here,so my tip might be a bit different :)

I use curd soap by a german brand called "Hirsch",it is with turpentine, wich helps the fibre to felt together very easy an quick, even if the water is low-temperatured

I use liquid clothes soap. It smells nice, i find it works well for me. I had to try a few before i found the soap i wanted...i grated actual soap, used washing powder, washing up liquid. etc. I was told to use soemthing gentle for your hands, but i use gloves as my water is boiling hot.
