I finally found roving at Michaels on clearance so I picked up three bags of it one bag white And two bags white and black.
I started to make them using wool yarn in the same color to use it up. I'm not too sure ihef I need to refelt them. I started with the soap and hot water occasionally needle felting some trouble spots. I want to get them as sturdy as possible before I go ahead and dye them with coffee. Thoughts or suggestions?

Could you post a picture of what you've done on them already? Actually seeing them will make it easier for us to offer guidance/suggestions :)

How many times have you felted them?? Do you know the micron count for your roving? Depending on the count depends on how many times you need to felt them. Definitely do more than one.

Some images would be helpful.

Hmm, going from those pictures they're going to need felting a fair few more times yet. Maybe you could try doing it in the washing machine? Palm roll each one and fold them over, then put them in a pillowcase, put a knot in the end of the pillowcase to stop the dreads accidentally escaping, and put them in the washing machine on a wool wash :)
