First dreads in over a year - HH naturals!

Post by [Phexxie] » Fri Mar 18, 2011 7:03 pm

My loose extensions were starting to look a little worse for wear, and I didnt really want to get rid of them since I had managed to get the colour match with my hair PERFECT!

So what does a girl do with old, rubbishy human hair?
Why, she dreads it of course!

Made using the backcomb/rip/crotchet method, single enders with a little loop of ribbon at the top to install with (similar to the doclocks o-ring method)
Then I popped on some cute little skull and bat beads I picked up from Etsy! (IKS also carries both, if anyone is curious :))

Sort of a half install in my deathhawk, so the top layer is left loose, I'm quite enjoying the effect, though I think I may trim the wispy ends later tonight

Also, I apologise for my awful self portraits... I'm off work ill and looking crappy, but I still can't take a picture of myself with no makeup!

And install! They actually turned out to be a bit longer than I initially thought, but I'm loving the messy, natural look and they're SOOOOOO cosy to sleep on!

And the back!

I think I'll be making more of these in the future, they could do with being a little neater but I honestly love them the way they are :D

Wow they look amazing!
I may never be a tall blonde-haired beauty but what's wrong with a short dread-headed cutie?

=O I love them! I've been investigating naturals myself and I have the bat beads but I haven't made any thin enough to squeeze them on yet. >_< They look amazing though! I love your install too!

those are super cute!
is it a bit harder to take care of the loose hair lik keeping it from knotting, with half installs?

An occasional squirt with leave-in conditioner helps to keep the loose hair from knotting.
What, that? It's a spade.

when i made these, i sort of measured them out lol, ill try and explain!

my extensions were all pre-tipped (by me!) and one set was thicker than the other, so with the thicker set i used five strands per dread and seven with the thinner set!
when i pre-tipped them, i measured by looking at the stitching... it has little 'V' shapes, so i counted five 'V' shapes per strand (for both the thicker and thinner extensions)
or,the easier way, about a centimetre or so per strand lol

so, you could just cut five centimetre pieces, or one 5cm strip, of weft per dread!

i think it depends on your backcombing too, i wanted to keep as much length as possible so i did a lot of backcomb, tear, re-backcomb, tear, backcomb, palm roll, backcomb, roll some more... all while pulling the hair down like you do with normal synth

plus, i crocheted them half to death (followed by more plam rolling lol), which i think may have helped them stay skinny and sturdy
i think i spent about 15-2o mins per dread in total, but it didnt really seem that long!
hope that helps a little :)

a very specific and precise mix of poppy red, vermillion red and pillarbox red over bleached hair

my natural colour comes out pretty much WHITE when its bleached, and the extensions were #60 prior to dying red
the lighter the base, the redder the red!
